Born and raised in the Bronx of the mid 20th century, I worked my way to and through college and a master’s degree, and also served as a park ranger, horticulturalist, land manager, science writer and web director.
I love to tell stories, and since 2007 more than 500 of my commentaries and features have appeared in the Providence Journal, which continues to publish my words every Friday.
Every spring since 2010, I’ve taught “Topics in Science Communications” at Brown University. This digital storytelling class helps students explain science, medicine, research, environmental and other complex topics and issues to the public at large.
In fall 2017, I will teach two English classes at Providence College.
Earlier in 2017, I worked as a storytelling consultant for mStoner, a digital-first agency, based in Chicago.
From 2005 through 2016, I was Brown University’s director of web communications.
Several times a year, I serve as a guest lecturer at colleges and universities and as a guest speaker at conservation, garden, rotary and other organizations. Topics include storytelling, persuasive communications, defining a brand, writing, nature observation and more.
Please feel free to contact me for more information about my teaching and speaking.
Testimonials
Scott Turner, tour leader, was super knowledgeable, interesting, and also really nice. None of this is surprising, since he is well-known for writing the bird column in the Providence Journal.
